Jumping into the healthcare debate, here’s my experience:

I recently broke my nose and sustained a number of deep cuts while abroad (in India). After a fairly hairy experience in a local hospital, I turned up to a big modern hospital in Delhi for further attention. From turning up in A+E, I went through triage, a CT scan and consultation with both a doctor on hand and a senior consultant within 20 minutes of arriving. I kid ye not.

Obviously this was fairly pricey, but not overwhelmingly so (the whole medical bills came to around £500, which will hopefully be made back from the travel insurance). Since returning to the UK (very unfortunately had to cut short the trip 3 days in!) I’ve been very happy with the attention I’ve had from the NHS but it is completely incomparable to the treatment I received in a so-called developing country. I may require a further operation on my nose, and I know full well that I will go private because the waiting on the NHS would be horrendous.

Where am I going with all this? Well, I don’t at all advocate a completely privatised system of healthcare (it is obvious in places like India, a country where poverty jumps out at you from everywhere, that it is the preserve of the rich whilst the poor members of society get by on precious little, if anything at all). But it *is* clear that the NHS in this country holds many back from the standards they should be expecting through high levels of taxation.

In my view, the NHS should be a safety net for the poorest and people with poor health, and that is all. Non-essential treatments should not be provided free at the point of delivery. It sounds callous, but this surely is the best way of doing things.

Either that or giving those with poor health or low incomes government-mandated insurance (like they do in Germany, and similar to the Obama plan, I believe).

564 – you know it’s funny, but I picked up a Sherlock Holmes book this afternoon, and found that Dr Watson had been wounded by a jezail bullet during the battle of Maiwand, in Afghanistan.

    Some things never change.

If we fight a war, we need to know three simple things:
    1) why are we fighting this war?
    2) What is the objective?
    3) How will we know when we reach it?

If soldiers have to die then that’s acceptable provided they know why and what they are fighting for, that their country supports them whole heartedly, and that they have everything we can give them to help them win.

Maybe you are right, I hope so.

The trouble is that there is so little information coming out of Afghanistan about what is really going on with the front-line troops. Press reports of any detail are few and far between and are almost always very imprecise interms of location. We have started to see the first tranche of books hit the shelves but these relate to events of 2006/7. Without current information we can’t make our own judgements.

I am drawn to the belief that the lack of information, and, in particular, the dearth of detail with respect to location, is due to deliberate MOD policy. They don’t want the public to find out what is going on and the especially don’t want the public to find out that we are fighting over the same ground year after year – because we don’t have the troops to hold what we clear.

    564. I always assumed that the purpose of the Iraq War was stealing the oil. I can’t handle the idea that it was done because the U.S. wanted to bring freedom to the Iraqis, because I don’t like to think that the people in charge were so stupid that they thought it would work. Stealing the oil at least seems like a viable objective.

I thought that was a given already, no? I thought the latest operations were in a large part to regain a lot of the ground that was under control this time last year, but was given up over the winter months.

570 – Labour has historically been against the armed forces. Nothing I have seen with this crowd convinces me otherwise.

If I had my way I would cut NHS spending by about 10% and divert this to the armed forces.

In 1988, I had taken a couple of days off work in December to do some belated Christmas shopping. I received an early telephone call from the office. I was told that a colleague with whom I worked closely on a daily basis had been on Pan Am 103. His wife and two children were also on the flight. I haven’t a strong view on the impending release of the Lockerbie bomber, but I have a very clear recollection of where I was and what I was doing that morning. I can even smell the coffee that was brewing on the stove when the call came through.

    567. How can Indians have a cutting-edge health service? Indians have low IQs, don’t they perish during treatment out of sheer idiocy?

    570. I don’t really give a toss about the Afghans, I doubt many do. I don’t wish them harm, I hope they prosper, I am sure they are charming people.

But the political arrangements they choose to make, or not make, are not worth the death of a single British soldier.

We should pull out, and admit a score draw. To whoever takes over – we say: do what you like, but if you let al Qaeada back, we will nuke you.

Then we stop all immigration from that part of the world, and buy their entire yearly opium crop. End of problem.

    575. Err… right…

I’m not saying, for the record, that Indians have a “cutting-edge health service.” The overwhelming majority of people in that country are very poor and have ridiculously low standards of healthcare. The UK is a utopia compared to the experiences of many Indians.

But it does go to show how, for a fairly low fee to us in the West, incredibly efficient and effective healthcare can be delivered from the private sector. There are numerous criticisms of such a system, but I cannot fault the treatment I received.
